DEKALB, Ill. – The University of Akron women's soccer team battled for 110 minutes on the road against Northern Illinois (4-7-3, 3-3-1 MAC) to a 0-0 draw to earn their third point in the Mid-American Conference play on Friday night at the NIU soccer complex.
"We were well in control of possession for portions of the game. We had three clear cut chances but did not capitalize," said head coach Noreen Herlihy. "The players competed very well and we will take the point on the road."
Collectively as a team, Akron (3-9-3, 0-4-3 MAC) totaled seven shots with a pair on goal. The Zips offense was paced by sophomore Rachel Baughman (Alliance, Ohio) who registered a team-leading two shots. Senior Madison Kaser (Silver Lake, Ohio), sophomore Erica Schrader (Blacklick, Ohio), and freshmen Ashley Amato (Pittsburgh, Pa.), Chloe Allen (Novi, Mich.), and Catie Corrigan (Avon Lake, Ohio) each posted a shot, respectively.
In the net for the Zips, senior Annabelle Hegeman (Frostburg, Md.) made four stops between the posts, while redshirt freshman Samara Yurchak (Leola, Pa.) stopped two shots to combine for the clean sheet against a potent NIU offense.
The first half was a battle of possession. The Zips and Huskies exchanged possession in the midfield while continuing to try and push the ball into their respective offensive thirds
Baughman got the Zips in the shot column in the 16th minute. The sophomore received a pass up the right side of the field, and raced passed her defender. The forward laced a shot but her ball curled to the right of the net.
Akron posted four shots in the second 45 minutes of play of the contest.
At the 58:10 mark, Baughman's second shot of the match strayed wide of net. Kaser followed up her teammates shot with one of her own in the 65' but again the shot landed wide of goal.
The Zips put two shots on goal in the final 20 minutes in attempts to give them a lead late in the game. In the 77' Schrader ripped a shot on goal that was turned away by the Huskies keeper, while Corrigan's attempt on goal at the 85:04 mark was again saved.
After 90 minutes had elapsed, the Zips and Huskies headed into extra-time all knotted up at zero.
In 20 minutes of overtime, Akron boasted a pair of shots. In the 102nd minute, Allen tallied a shot that would sail just high of the cross bar and out of play. Amato attempted one more shot for the Zips in the final minute of play that landed on top of the goal just inches from giving the Akron the win.
Akron travels to Kalamzoo, Mich., on Oct. 16, for a meeting with Western Michigan. The Zips and Broncos are slated for a 1 p.m. kick off at WMU Soccer Complex.
