Volleyball Fights in 3-1 Battle Versus Miami (Ohio)

AKRON, Ohio – Despite breaking Miami's 28-set winning streak, the University of Akron volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to the Redhawks on Saturday night at James A. Rhodes Arena.
Sophomore Kayla Gwozdz (Temperance, Mich.) led the way for the third consecutive match, recording 11 kills. Senior Amanda Bedell (Hudson, Ohio) contributed 10 kills while sophomore Patience Brown (Bloomington, Ill.) tallied seven kills and three service aces to the Akron effort.
Senior Karley Kusan (Columbus, Ohio) marked her ninth double-double on the year after totaling 37 assists and 13 digs. Senior Brenna Mack (Mound, Minn.) added a match-high 18 digs while Brown and junior Jessica Kloehn (Milwaukee, Wis.) each registered three blocks.
Miami had three players notch double-digit kills led by Maris Below with 14.
Akron dropped the first two sets but came back to take the third 25-22 after a tight battle that saw four tie scores down the stretch.
Miami claimed the momentum right out the gate and took a 10-7 lead, and eventually extended its control to 22-16. However, the Zips captured three straight points to fight back within three. MU notched crucial back-to-back scores for a 24-19 advantage but Akron was able to disrupt the Redhawks' flow until a kill by Paige Hill sealed the win.
With the score even at 14-all midway through the second period, Akron took the next two points but Miami was able to tie it up again. At 16-16, the Redhawks went on a 9-2 run to close out the frame.
The Zips fell behind early in the third stanza, 16-9, but countered by going on a 9-2 run that tied the set. The teams traded points over the next few plays before Akron managed pull off the 25-22 upset and forced a fourth set.
The Redhawks took control in the fourth and final set with a five-point outburst that required an Akron timeout. UA fought back to tie the score, 8-8, but that is the closest the Zips would get as Miami's lead grew as large as eight points.
Akron hits the road for the first time this month as the Zips head to Kalamazoo, Mich. to face off against Western Michigan at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 14.
