Zips Soccer Fights but Drops 4-0 to Kent State

AKRON, Ohio – The Akron women's soccer team fought for 90 minutes with the top team in the Mid-American Conference, Kent State, but fell, 4-0, on Thursday night at FirstEnergy – Cub Cadet Field.
On the night, the Zips offense was paced by senior Sarah Sivic (Broadview Heights, Ohio) with five shots, while senior Hannah Werth (Bloomington, Minn.) and sophomore Erica Schrader (Blacklick, Ohio) tallied two shots each. An additional seven Akron players recorded a shot, respectively. In total, Akron registered 16 shots with three coming on goal.
In the net, senior Annabelle Hegeman (Frostburg, Md.) corralled six saves for the Zips. Redshirt freshman Samara Yurchak (Leola, Pa.) made an appearance in the 73 minute of the game but did not see any attempts by Kent State in 17 minutes of action.
Kent State got on the board early in the seventh minute of the contest to take a 1-0 advantage. Jenna Hellstrom found Donavan Capehart in the middle of the box and she beat the keeper to the left side.
The Zips had a pair of opportunities in the 19' of the run of play. Freshman Ashley Amato (Pittsburgh, Pa) attempted a header off a corner kick that was blocked and forced out of bounds by a Kent State defender. Akron was awarded a second corner kick but the Golden Flashes cleared the ball out of play.
The Golden Flashes increased their lead to 2-0 at the 26:14 mark of the first half. Hellstrom possessed the ball along the right side of the field and sent a ball into the box. Capehart floated a header past Hegeman to the left side of the goal for the score.
O'Brien ripped a shot on goal in the 40' of the first half from 30 yards out to try and get the Zips on the board before halftime but the Flashes keeper was able to make the save above her head.
The Golden Flashes leading scorer, Hellstrom, extended the Kent State lead to 3-0 at the 46:46 mark. Hellstrom curled in a ball off a corner kick that could not be handled by Hegeman and bounced over the end line.
Akron began the second period looking to be aggressive with the ball in their offensive side of the field. Sivic boasted a pair of shots in the 47' and 48' with her second shot being turned away by the KSU goalie.
KSU scored for a final time in the 60' when Hellstrom had a breakaway down the right side of the field and snuck a shot through the legs of Hegeman for the goal.
Following the Golden Flashes goal, the Zips boasted seven shots in the final minutes of play with one coming on frame as the game came to a close.
The contest between the Zips and Golden Flashes was a part of the Crystal Clinic Orthopedic Center Wagon Wheel Challenge between the two rivals. Kent State earned a point in the challenge with the victory.
Akron returns to Mid-American Conference action on Sunday, Oct. 8, when the Zips travel to Ohio University. Akron and the Bobcats square off at 1 p.m.
