AKRON, Ohio – A goal in the eighth minute of the game was all Eastern Michigan would need to edge the Zips, 1-0, despite a late push by Akron on the Zips final home match of the 2016 regular season, Sunday afternoon at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet field.
Five Akron players including sophomores Shea O'Brien (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) and Erica Schrader (Blacklick, Ohio), along with freshmen Catie Corrigan (Avon Lake, Ohio), Amy Rogozinski (Westlake, Ohio), and Julia Crowe (Ann Arbor, Mich.) all tallied one shot on the day for the Zips.
Senior Annabelle Hegeman (Frostburg, Md.) returned to action for the Zips after missing a pair of games. The senior keeper corralled seven saves in the affair.
Eastern Michigan held the advantage in the initial 15 minutes holding possession in its half of the field. After a couple early shots, the Eagles were able to take a 1-0 advantage at the 8:46 mark. Ellie Tillar received a pass just inside the box in the middle of the field and beat Hegeman to her left for the goal.
In the 38th minute, the Zips moved the ball well in the midfield between freshman Stephanie Wiles (West Chester, Ohio), senior Madison Kaser (Silver Lake, Ohio) and O'Brien. O'Brien found space around her and had an open look from 35 yards out but the EMU keeper stood tall for the save.
The Zips made a run into their offensive third during the 56th minute of play. Schrader possessed the ball just outside the box on the left side of the field, she created separation from her defender and sent a curling shot towards the net that landed wide of frame.
Akron had an opportunity to tie up the match late in the contest (87:51). After recently subbing in, senior Hannah Werth (Bloomington, Minn.) received the ball off a throw in. The defender crossed the ball into the box from right side of the field to Crowe. In the middle of the box, Crowe got her right foot on the ball but put too much spin on the shot as it pushed the ball wide of goal.
The Zips close out the 2016 regular season with a trip to Buffalo, N.Y. to take on the Bulls. Akron and Buffalo will go head-to-head on Oct. 29, with first touch at noon.
