BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Akron women's soccer team season came to end after falling to Buffalo, 1-0, in the final regular season contest of the 2016 season on Thursday afternoon.
"Thank you to our six seniors who have given everything they have to this program. Day in and day out, those girls have done everything we have asked and more," said head coach Noreen Herlihy. "Each of them epitomizes what it means to be a true student-athlete. They are Zips true and true and they have shown class and integrity in all they do."
The Akron offensive efforts were led by senior Sarah Sivic (Broadview Heights, Ohio), along with freshmen Chloe Allen (Novi, Mich.), and Catie Corrigan (Avon Lake, Ohio), who all garnered a shot each. Sivic and Allen's shot came on frame for the Zips.
Senior Annabelle Hegeman (Frostburg, Md.) made a season and career single game-high 11 saves in the contest against the Bulls.
Buffalo claimed the 1-0 lead in the ninth minute of the contest as the Bulls leading goal-scorer Celina Carrero headed a ball into the back of the net for the score.
Akron strung together a pair of opportunities to get on the board in the 20' and 21' minute. Sivic posted the Zips first shot on goal at the 19:39 mark but the Bulls keeper was able to make the play. Corrigan followed with a shot at the 20:14 mark that sailed high of the goal.
The Zips had another chance to tie up the game when Allen subbed in the game at the 35:19 mark of the first half. One minute after entering the match (36:31), the forward fired a shot on goal that was again corralled by the goalie.
The Zips end the season with a 4-11-4 overall record, while posting a 1-6-4 MAC record.
