Williams Earns Runner-Up, Zips Finish Third at Mountaineer Invitational

Bridgeport, W.Va. – Senior J.B. Williams (Danville, Ky.) earned runner-up with a 5-under par 54-hole performance to lead the Akron men's golf team to a third place finish, 875 (+11), at the Mountaineer Invitational on Tuesday.
The Zips entered the final day of competition at the Pete Dye Course with 4-5 holes remaining from the previous day's second round, and finished with a 296 (+8) total. Akron fell four spots on the leaderboard to seventh overall after 36 holes, 589 (+13), before climbing back to third place during the final 18 holes with a field-low 2-under par 286 team effort.
"Today was a total team effort," Zips' head coach David Trainor said. " I am very proud of our team and everyone contributed to our success, especially, J.B. who played very well from start to finish."
Williams opened the tournament with a 3-under 69 tally with an eagle, two birdies and a bogey mixed with 14 par scores. He followed with a 2-under 70 performance on three birdies, two bogeys, and 14 pars for a 139 (-5) two-round total, heading into the final round. During the final 18-holes, Williams played even-par golf with three birdies, three bogeys and 12 pars to finish tied for second place with a 211 (-5) 54-hole total.
Sophomore Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.) followed in scoring for the Zips, finishing the tournament tied for 17th overall with a 219 (+3). He followed rounds of 73 (+1) and 79 (+7) with a 5-under 67 final round performance, carding an eagle, four birdies, a bogey, and 12 pars.
Junior George Baylis (Ascot, England) and senior Zach Gollwitzer (Baldwin, Mo.) added scores of 222 (+6) and 228 (+12), while senior Yann Pfeiffer (Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche, France) rounded out the scoring with a 230 (+14) total.
Arkansas won the team championship with a 858 (-6) team performance, while Patrick Flavin of Miami (Ohio) earned medalist honors with a 210 (-6) 54-hole total.Â
Up next for the Zips is a three-day event in the Outer Banks, N.C. on Sunday-Tuesday, Oct. 23-25, for the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate at Kilmarlic Golf Club.
