Powells Point, N.C.  – After the first round of play at the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate, the Akron men's golf team leads the field by two strokes with a 5-under par 279 opening round team effort. Three of the Zips' starting five carded scores below par as senior J.B. Williams (Danville, Ky.) is tied for the top spot on the leaderboard with Bowling Green's Pablo Heredia Iglesias and La Salle's Andrew Reynolds at 4-under par with 67 strokes.
"We played well today," Zips' head coach David Trainor said. "We started the round great on the most difficult side of the course. We spun some shots on some of the hard holes, but finished strong. I'm proud of their effort, and we are looking forward to the second round."
Williams was one of the players who started strong. He was part of the final grouping to tee off from hole No. 1 at 10:36 a.m., and opened the round with a birdie. He moved back to even-par after the second hole and fired another birdie-bogey combination to remain even through seven holes. Williams finished the initial nine holes by firing back-to-back birdies to move to 2-under par with 33 strokes. On the back, Williams collected three more birdies mixed with a bogey and five pars for another 2-under par performance. Williams carded eight pars, seven birdies and three bogeys to finish the opening round tied for first on the leaderboard with a 67 (-4) 18-hole total.
Junior George Baylis (Ascot, England) followed in team scoring with a 2-under par 69 performance, which was good for fifth on the leaderboard. Like Williams, Baylis started strong by recording a birdie on the opening hole, but bogeyed the third hole for an even scorecard. He responded with his second birdie of the day on hole No. 4, and finished the front-9 even after a bogey on the ninth hole. On the back, Baylis played even-par golf, carding eight pars with an eagle for the 2-under departure.Â
Sophomore Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.) was the final part of the trio to turn-in an under-par scorecard. He finished the initial 18 holes with a 70 (-1) on 12 pars, four birdies, a bogey and a double bogey. He cruised through the first five holes of the opening round with three pars and two birdies. He doubled hole No. 6 for an even scorecard and fell behind a stroke after the seventh hole, but responded with a par and birdie to end the front-9 even. Grayson recorded one birdie on the back for the 1-under finish.
Seniors Yann Pfeiffer (Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche, France), and Zach Gollwitzer (Baldwin, Mo.) rounded out the Zips' scoring with 73 (+2) and 79 (+8) scores, respectively.
Ball State trails the Zips in team scoring by two strokes with a 281, while host Old Dominion is currently third with a 2-under par 282 team effort.
Tuesday's second round is scheduled to begin with split tee times from holes No. 1 and 10 at 8:30 a.m. Akron is slated to start the second round on the front tee box at 10 a.m. – Gollwitzer 10 a.m., Pfeiffer 10:09 a.m., Grayson 10:18 a.m., Baylis 10:27 a.m., and Williams 10:36 a.m.
