AKRON, Ohio -- Akron defeated Navy in straight sets (25-20, 26-24, 25-23) on the opening day of the Akron Invitational at James A. Rhodes Arena.
With the win, Akron improves to 2-3 overall while Navy falls to 0-4.
Senior Dragana Micic led the Zips with 11 kills, followed closely by Kelsey Wilson with 10. Wilson was effective in the middle for Akron, posting only one error to hit .643 in the match.
Karley Kusan and Ashley Holder put up 17 and 16 assists, respectively, while both setters added seven digs apiece. Micic also had a team-high nine digs while Brenna Mack wasn't far behind with eight digs of her own.
Amanda Bedell and Jessica Kloehn were offensive threats as well. Bedell contributed eight kills while Kloehn tallied six kills and only one error for a .500 clip.
The first set started off with both teams trading points as the score was tied seven times before the Zips took a 19-14 lead. Navy would eventually fight back to come within three points, but back-to-back kills at the hands of Micic and Wilson were enough to give the first set to Akron.
The second set was hotly contested, despite Navy building a quick 6-1 lead to start. Akron eventually fought back to tie the score 14-14 and then took the lead after a kill from Kloehn. It was a back-and-forth affair as the score was 24-23 in favor of Akron. However, Navy would score the next point forcing Akron to call a timeout. The Zips took advantage of a Navy error and executed a kill from Micic to complete the second set.
The Mids took the first point of the third set but Akron quickly tied the score and took an 11-6 lead. When it looked like the Zips had the match locked up, the Mids nearly turned the tables after recording four straight points to bring the score within one, 19-18. UA put an end to Navy's rally and held on to claim the final set to improve to 2-3 on the season.
The Zips will look to defend their home court in a doubleheader tomorrow on the final day of tournament play. Akron will face off against Saint Francis at 12:30 p.m. and Canisius at 7 p.m. at the JAR.
