Akron Rifle set to begin its 2015-16 campaign

AKRON, Ohio – The Akron rifle team is set to open its 2015-16 campaign this Saturday, Sept. 26, at the Tiger Open in Memphis, Tenn.
Competing in the opening-weekend match along with the Zips is UAB, Ole Miss, Texas Christian, Jacksonville State, Memphis and UT-Martin.
In the teams' qualifying match for the Tiger Open, sophomore Julia Hatch (Northfield, Vt.) and junior Zachary Strohl (Barto, Pa.) were the two top marksmen for the Zips. Hatch finished first in the Smallbore (577) and second in the Air Rifle (584). As for Strohl, he shot a team-best in the Air Rifle (587) and a team second-best mark in the Smallbore (572).
Making the trip along with Hatch and Strohl are junior Connor O'Mara (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) and freshman Caleb Lloyd.
As a team, the squad shot a combined 4,618 for the qualifying round.
Akron returns 12 members from last year's squad with four new members made up of four incoming freshman Lloyd, Rebecca Green, Joshua Kovach (Akron, Ohio), and Danielle Makucevich and a sophomore, Marlee Reynolds, who was on the Akron Rifle Club a year ago.
Last season, Akron faced two of the upcoming six opponents. The Zips defeated Memphis at the Zippy Open with a score of 4,623 to 4,612. Later in the year, Akron went head-to-head with Ole Miss and came out on top, 4,601-4,591.
