Willis sweeps hurdles races to lead Akron at Northeast Ohio Quad

AKRON, Ohio - The Akron track and field team garnered victories in 15 events in first-day competition at the Northeast Ohio Quad on Thursday, April 2, at the Lee R. Jackson Track and Field Complex.
The Zips kicked off the day capturing first in the women's 4x100 relay as the team of senior Rachel Christian (Columbus, Ohio), sophomores Samia Bell (Cincinnati, Ohio), Daniella Johnson (Gahanna, Ohio) and Daziah Green (Canton, Ohio) crossed the line in 46.64.
Sophomore Dan Zupan (Berea, Ohio) won the men's 1,500-meter race posting a time of 3:58.82.
Registering victories in both the women's 100- and 400-meter hurdles was senior Skyler Willis (Cincinnati, Ohio) in times of 13.86 and 61.22, respectively.
Triumphing in the women's 400-meter race in 57.09 was Green, while in the men's running, sophomore Miles Baldwin (Cincinnati, Ohio) placed first in 47.09, the third-fastest time in program history.
Johnson recorded a mark of 12.27 to win the women's 100-meter dash.
In the men's 800, sophomore Clayton Murphy (New Paris, Ohio) claimed first place in 1:56.13.
The Zips swept the 3,000-meter runs as redshirt junior Maria Moore (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) and redshirt junior Kyle Cochrun (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) won their respective races in 10:30.07 and 8:37.79.
Taking top honors for Akron in the men's 4x400 relay in 3:18.03 was the team of redshirt sophomores Mike Ohiembor (Dayton, Ohio), Alante Oliver (Dayton, Ohio), senior Sean Weems (Maple Heights, Ohio) and redshirt junior Brent Gray (Cincinnati, Ohio).
In women's field events, the Zips garnered first-place finishes in the shot put and long jump from senior Alexis Cooks (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and redshirt sophomore Ana Martin-Sacristan (Valencia, Spain). Cooks won the shot put with a throw of 51-4.25 (15.65m), while Martin-Sacristan jumped 18-9 (5.71m) in the long jump.
Freshman Jordan Latimer (Huber Heights, Ohio) claimed the men's long jump with a leap of 24-6.50 (7.48m), while sophomore Phil Jagers (Solon, Ohio) won the men's discus with a mark of 181-2 (55.21m), the fourth-best throw in school history.
Competition wraps up at the Northeast Ohio Quad on Friday, April 3, with eight field events (men's and women's pole vault, men's and women's high jump, men's and women's javelin and the men's and women's hammer) starting at 2 p.m.
