AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron track and field team faces a challenging week, as the Zips will participate in six different competitions beginning on Wednesday, April 15.
Akron is set to compete at the California Invitational Combined/Mt. Sac Relays Combined Events on Wednesday and Thursday, April 15-16, in Azusa, Calif., Mt. Sac Relays Thursday through Saturday, April 16-18, Cal-State Los Angeles Twilight Open in Los Angles, Calif., on Thursday, April 16, Beach Track and Field Invitational at Cerritos College in Norwalk, Calif., on Friday and Saturday, April 17-18, Bryan Clay Track and Field Invitational in Azusa, Calif., on Friday, April 17, and the Walsh Invitational in Canton, Ohio on Saturday, April 18.
Redshirt sophomore Quentin Cieslinski (Madison, Ohio) and freshman Jackie Siefring (Covington, Ohio) will open competition at the California Invitational Combined/Mt. Sac Relays Combined Events on Wednesday, April 15, participating in first-day events in the decathlon and heptathlon, respectively.
Competing in the elite men's pole vault and elite women's high jump on Friday, April 17, and Saturday, April 18, respectively, will be junior Shawn Barber (Kingwood, Texas) and senior Claudia Garcia Jou (Barcelona, Spain).
Also traveling to the Mt. Sac Relays will be sophomore Miles Baldwin (Cincinnati, Ohio), freshman Mitch Cavalier (Louisville, Ohio), senior Rachel Christian (Columbus, Ohio), redshirt junior Kyle Cochrun (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio), freshman Jamir Coleman (Lima, Ohio), senior Alexis Cooks (Colorado Springs, Colo.), senior Jess Delic (Cresson, Pa.), redshirt junior Megan Dornisch (St. Mary's, Pa.), redshirt sophomore Weronika Gaudyn (Kracow, Poland), redshirt junior Brent Gray (Cincinnati, Ohio), sophomore Daziah Green (Canton, Ohio), redshirt sophomore Caroline Hasse (Potsdam, Germany), sophomore Phil Jagers (Solon, Ohio), sophomore Daniella Johnson (Gahanna, Ohio), freshman Jordan Latimer (Huber Heights, Ohio), senior Bryce Lemon (New Brighton, Pa.), senior Claire Lucas (Sagamore Hills, Ohio), redshirt sophomore Ana Martin-Sacristan (Valencia, Spain), freshman Terrell McClain (Youngstown, Ohio), sophomore Clayton Murphy (New Paris, Ohio), redshirt sophomore Mike Ohiembor (Dayton, Ohio), redshirt sophomore Alante Oliver (Dayton Ohio), sophomore Matt Rowland (Bellevue, Ohio), redshirt junior Zack Shull (Columbus, Ohio), sophomore Becky Szabo (North Olmsted, Ohio), senior Sean Weems (Maple Heights, Ohio), senior Skyler Willis (Cincinnati, Ohio), junior Natalie Zidd (Hinckley, Ohio) and sophomore Dan Zupan (Berea, Ohio).
Currently slated to compete at the Walsh Invitational are freshman Rachel Audet (Sylvania, Ohio), redshirt freshman Sarah Kupniewski (Erie, Pa.), redshirt freshman Molly Lalonde (Grove City, Ohio), redshirt junior Maria Moore (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) and senior Jillian Roth (North Canton, Ohio). Additional Zips may be added to the field at the Walsh Invitational.
The Akron men's squad currently is the top-rated team in the Mid-American Conference checking in at No. 33 in latest United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Division I National Team Computer Rankings released on Monday, April 13. The Zips' women's team is rated 37th. The squads are also rated third and sixth, respectively, in the most recent Great Lakes Regional rankings.
The Zips have five student-athletes ranked in the top-25 nationally by the Track and Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS), including Barber, who owns the top mark nationally in the men's pole vault (19-4.25).
Also rated among the top-25 are Garcia Jou (third in high jump/6-1.50) and Cooks (14th in hammer/201-09 and 19th in shot put/52-3.25), Hasse (17th in pole vault/13-7.25) and Szabo (17th in pole vault/13-7.25).
