THIS WEEK
Akron softball travels to Youngstown State on Tuesday, April 14, for a 3 p.m. doubleheader at the YSU Softball Complex.
The Zips then resume Mid-American Conference play with a doubleheader at Toledo on Friday, April 17, at 1 p.m. at the Scott Park Complex.
Akron then travels to Bowling Green for single MAC games on Saturday, April 18, at 2 p.m. and Sunday, April 19, at 1 p.m. at Meserve Field.
Akron returns 11 letterwinners, including five starters, from a year ago. The Zips welcome six true freshmen.
The Akron Zips, under ninth-year head coach Julie Jones, stand 16-18 overall and 4-5 in MAC play after a series sweep of Buffalo. The Zips have won four of their last five contests.
After 34 contests, Akron has three players batting over .300. Senior SS Chelsea Wildey (Oviedo, Fla.) is the Zips' top hitter, batting .317 with 19 hits, three doubles, a triple, and six RBI in 23 starts. Sophomore 3B Alyssa Nicholas (Cortland, Ohio) follows at .310. She has a team-best 31 hits, five doubles, five home runs, and a team-best 26 RBI in 34 starts. Senior 2B Kellie Roudabush (Hilliard, Ohio) bats .309 with 29 hits, three doubles, three home runs, and 14 RBI in 34 starts.
In the circle, 2014 MAC Pitcher of the Year Erin Seiler (Bowling Green, Ohio) stands 16-12 after 177.2 innings of action. She's struck out a MAC-best and season record 225 batters and walked 45 while throwing 25 complete games, including five shutouts. Freshman Paige McMenemy (Westerville, Ohio) has made nine appearances (0-3 overall), throwing 26.2 innings. She has 18 strikeouts and 12 walks.
SCOUTING YOUNGSTOWN STATE
The Penguins, under seventh-year head coach Brian Campbell, stand 12-20 overall and 5-6 in Horizon League play after going 1-2 in series action against Cleveland State over the weekend. Sophomore IF Alexandria Gibson is the top hitter at .393 with 11 hits, two doubles, six home runs, and 16 RBI in 18 games. Junior 3B Miranda Castiglione follows (.347) with 33 hits, six doubles, two triples, three home runs, and 19 RBI in 32 starts. In the circle, sophomore RHP Caitlyn Minney (4-8 overall) has pitched 88.1 innings and has a 4.91 ERA. She's struck out 68 and walked 52.
Akron holds a 48-24-1 series edge over Youngstown State since the teams first met in 1980. Last season, the squads split a twinbill at Lee R. Jackson Field with the Zips winning game one, 8-2, and dropping game two, 8-7.
SCOUTING TOLEDO
The Rockets, under first-year head coach Kristen Butler, stand 15-24 overall and 2-8 in MAC splitting a weekend series with Miami (Ohio). Toledo is slated to play a doubleheader at Detroit on April 15 prior to hosting Akron. Sophomore UT Celeste Fidge is the top hitter at .379 with 44 hits, eights doubles, four triples, four home runs, and 29 RBI in 38 starts. Sophomore IF Chandler Rice follows (.336) with 42 hits, seven doubles, two home runs, and 18 RBI in 39 starts. In the circle, sophomore RHP Emily Anderson (7-11 overall) has pitched 133.2 innings and has a 4.29 ERA. She's struck out 82 and walked 55.
Akron holds a 37-31 series advantage over Toledo since 1981. Last season in Akron, the Zips swept the series with a 4-3 win in eight innings and a 5-2 win.
SCOUTING BOWLING GREEN
The Falcons, under ninth-year head coach Shannon Salsburg, stand 13-19 overall and 4-6 in MAC play after dropping two games to Ball State. BGSU plays a twinbills at Notre Dame (April 15) and against Ohio (April 17) before hosting Akron. Junior OF Molly Holliday is the top hitter at .376 with 35 hits, two doubles, a triple, and five RBI in 32 starts. Sophomore IF Aspen Searle follows (.352) with 37 hits, nine doubles, two triples, eight home runs, and a team-best 22 RBI in 32 games. In the circle, senior RHP Jamie Kertes (7-9) has pitched 93.0 innings and has a 3.61 ERA. She's struck out 74 and walked 16.
Bowling Green edges Akron in series action 51-23-1. Last spring the teams split a twinbillat Lee R. Jackson Field with identical 4-1 scores.
LAST OUTING
Akron swept two games from Buffalo in Mid-American Conference play over the weekend. The series was originally supposed to take place in Buffalo. However, the Bulls' field was unplayable. Both games were moved to Akron.
In Saturday's 1-0 shutout, Akron scored the game's only run in the top of the seventh after six scoreless innings. Sophomore 3B Alyssa Nicholas (Cortland, Ohio) hammered her fifth home run of the season over the left center field fence. Junior RHP Erin Seiler struck out nine batters and walked one while hurling all seven innings.
In Sunday's 9-0 shutout victory, the Zips captured the win in five innings. The nine runs are the most the Zips have scored in a single game this season. Senior 2B Kellie Roudabush led Akron at the plate, going 3-of-4 with a home run, four RBI, and a stolen base. Seiler picked up her 16th win of the season (16-12 overall, 4-5 MAC). She struck out seven batters and walked none. With her seven strikeouts on the day, Seiler re-wrote her own school record for Ks in a season. She now has 225 strikeouts in 29 games. The previous season record was 219 strikeouts, which she set as a freshman in 2013.
RECORD WATCH
Junior RHP Erin Seiler broke her own strikeout record. With her seven strikeouts against Buffalo on April 12, Seiler re-wrote her own school record for Ks in a season. She now has 225 strikeouts in 29 games. In 2013, she set the season record for strikeouts with 219.
Seiler is also four wins away from tying her mark of 20 wins from last season. The season record is 25 wins.
With her career-high 15 strikeouts against Central Michigan on April 4, Seiler became Akron's career strikeout leader. She now has 615 strikeouts in her three-year career. The previous record was 575 by Tina McCauley (2001-05).
COUNTDOWN TO POSTSEASON
Akron has 16 games remaining in the regular season. The 2015 MAC Tournament will be held May 6-9 at Akron's Firestone Stadium. Only the top eight teams advance to the double elimination tourney.
200 WINS FOR JONES
With their 6-3 win over host George Mason in the first day of action at the Cherry Blossom Classic, the Zips gave their head coach Julie Jones a very special honor– her 200th win at Akron.
MAC HONORS
For the second time this season, junior Erin Seiler was named the Mid-American Conference co-Pitcher of the Week for the East Division on March 17.
Seiler pitched all 28.0 innings in four victories at the Cherry Blossom Classic over the weekend, helping the Zips to the team title. She went 4-0 for a 1.93 ERA.
Seiler also was recognized by the MAC on Feb. 17. Sophomore 3B Alyssa Nicholas was named MAC Player of the Week on March 10.
