THIS WEEK
Akron softball returns to sunny Florida on March 6-8 for the Rebel Spring Games at the Diamond Plex in Winter Haven. In Friday's opener, the Zips face Sacred Heart at 10 a.m. and St. Francis (Pa.) at 12:15 p.m.
On Saturday, March 7, Akron plays Presbyterian at 10 a.m., followed by Florida A&M at 12:15 p.m.
On Sunday, March 8, the Zips conclude tourney play with Creighton at 9 a.m. and Lehigh at 11:15 a.m.
There are no live stats for this tournament.
Akron returns 11 letterwinners, including five starters, from a year ago. The Zips welcome six true freshmen.
The Akron Zips, under ninth-year head coach Julie Jones, stand 6-7 overall after three losses at Lipscomb's Purple-Gold Challenge.
After 13 contests, junior C McKenzi Rhodes (Marengo, Ohio) is the Zips' top hitter, batting .296 with eight hits, two doubles, a home run, and four RBI in 13 starts. Senior SS Chelsea Wildey (Oviedo, Fla.) follows with a .292. She has seven hits, two doubles, and five RBI in 10 starts.
On the mound, 2014 MAC Pitcher of the Year Erin Seiler (Bowling Green, Ohio) stands 6-3 after 58.1 innings of action. She's struck out 83 batters and walked 16 while throwing eight complete games, including two shutouts.
SCOUTING SACRED HEART
The Pioneers, under 26th-year head coach Elizabeth Luckie, stand 1-9 overall after two losses in their opening games at the Rebel Spring Games on March 4. SHU lost 6-0 to Presbyterian and 3-2 to St. Francis. Sophomore IF Victoria D'Addario is Sacred Heart's top hitter, batting .333 with two hits, a RBI, and a run in five starts. On the mound, senior Kacie Wentworth is 0-5 with a 7.75 ERA in seven games. She's thrown 21.2 innings, fanning 19 batters and walking 15.
In series action, Sacred Heart leads Akron, 4-3, since their first meeting in 1983.

SCOUTING ST. FRANCIS
The Red Flash, under fourth-year head coach Jennifer Patrick-Swift, stand 7-3 overall after splitting a pair of games in their Rebel Games opener on March 4. St. Francis beat Sacred Heart, 3-2, before falling to Presbyterian, 3-0. Junior OF Kate Blattenberger is the top hitter at .444 with four hits, a double, and a RBI in five starts. On the mound, sophomore Alexis Bower (3-1) has pitched 15.0 innings and given up three runs for a 1.20 ERA. She's struck out 11 and walked five.
Since 1996, Akron leads SFU in series action, 12-6. The split a double-header last season in Loretto, winning 5-1 before falling 5-6 in eight innings.
SCOUTING PRESBYTERIAN
The Blue Hose, under second-year head coach Britne Stubbs, stand 5-5 overall after two wins to open Rebel Games play. PC shut out Sacred Heart, 6-0, and St. Francis, 3-0. Junior IF Kersten Legacki is the team's top batter, hitting .517 with a team-best 15 hits, three doubles, four home runs, and 11 RBI in 10 starts. On the mound, junior RHP Sydney Seigler is 2-1 with a 2.36 ERA in 26.2 innings of action. She's fanned 12 batters and walked five.
This is the first meeting between Akron and Presbyterian on the softball diamond.
SCOUTING FLORIDA A&M
The Rattlers, under 24th-year head coach Veronica Wiggins, stand 2-19 overall after a 13-0 loss to Boston College on March 3. Senior IF Alyssa Weaver is the top hitter, batting .302 with 13 hits, a double, and five RBI in 20 starts. On the mound, sophomore RHP Kenya Pereira (1-11) has a 7.75 ERA in 72.0 innings of action. She's walked 46 and fanned 44.
Akron holds a 3-0 series edge over FAMU since the teams first met in 1984.

SCOUTING LEHIGH
The Mountain Hawks, under 20th-year head coach Fran Troyan, stand 3-1 overall after a 3-2 win over St. Francis on March 1. Freshman OF Nicole Yozzo is the top batter (.825) with 12 hits, six runs, and a RBI in four starts. On the mound, senior RHP Emily Bausher (2-0) has a 1.00 ERA in 14.0 innings of action. She's fanned 14 and walked four.
Akron and Lehigh have only met once on the softball diamond. The Mountain Hawks shut out UA, 4-0, on March 11, 2013, at the Rebel Spring Games.
LAST OUTING
Akron had a rough weekend at Lipscomb's Purple-Gold Challenge, going 0-3. Freshman shortstop Caitlin Gambone was the Zips' top hitter (.429), recording three hits, all doubles, and an RBI in three starts. Senior second baseman Kellie Roudabush (.286) followed with two hits and two RBI.
On the mound, junior RHP Erin Seiler went 0-2 for a 5.40 ERA in two complete games. She fanned 19 batters and walked three in 13.1 innings of work.
MAC LEADERS
As of March 4, Akron junior RHP Erin Seiler leads all MAC pitchers in strikeouts (83), strikeouts looking (22), wins (6), and home runs allowed (0). She is second in innings pitched (58.1) and third in ERA (1.92). Senior Taryn Allmon and freshman Cassie Gillespie are tied for the most sacrifice bunts (7).
UP NEXT
Akron travels to George Mason's Invitational in Fairfax, Va., on March 13-15. The Zips will face Wagner, Georgetown, and host George Mason.
