FAIRBANKS, Alaska — Competing as an individual, Akron junior Matt Chezem (Simi Valley, Calif.) finished 25th in the air rifle competition at the 2015 NCAA Rifle Championship on Saturday morning at the UAF Patty Center in Fairbanks, Alaska.
Chezem fired a 589. West Virginia's Maren Prediger dominated the event with a 598. The top eight finishers advanced to the afternoon finals. Chezem holds the school record in air rifle with a 595 (out of a possible 600 points) which he set earlier this year at Navy.
In the final team standings, West Virginia (4,702) won the 2015 NCAA Championship by two shots over host Alaska (4,700). TCU was third (4,667).
The University of Akron will host the 2016 NCAA Rifle Championship at Stile Athletics Field House. It will mark the first time in school history that UA has hosted a national championship (in any sport).
Akron's rifle season is complete. However, the Zips will hold their Alumni Extravaganza Match on April 11-12 at Schrank Hall South. The event was re-scheduled from Jan. 24-25.
