Murphy turns in record-setting performance to lead Akron at Zips Invitational

AKRON, Ohio – The Akron men's and women's track and field teams each registered dual-meet victories over Youngstown State at the Zips Invitational on Friday, Feb. 20, at the Stile Athletics Field House.
Sophomore Clayton Murphy (New Paris, Ohio) turned in the highlight of the evening establishing a new school-record time of 1:47.82 to win the men's 800 meters. The time was the ninth-fastest mark in the country this season.
Junior Shawn Barber (Kingwood, Texas) cleared 19-0 for the sixth time in seven competitions this season surpassing 19-0.25 (5.80m) to win the men's pole vault.
Sophomore Brent Gray (Cincinnati, Ohio) turned in the second-best time (47.04) in program history in the men's 400 meters to win the race. Equaling the fourth-fastest time in school history to cross the line second in 47.73 was freshman James Browder (Pickerington, Ohio).
Senior Alexis Cooks (Colorado Springs, Colo.) tossed the second-best mark (53-9.75/16.40m) in program history to win the women's shot put. In the men's shot put, junior Casey Slane (Marion, Ohio), finished third with a throw of 51-5.
Posting the fourth-best jump in school history in the women's pole vault was senior Claire Lucas (Sagamore Hills, Ohio), who won the event with a clearance of 13-9.75.
Freshman Garrett Crichlow (Twinsburg, Ohio) captured the opening running event of the evening winning the men's mile in a personal-best of 4:16.12.
Redshirt junior Maria Moore (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) came from behind to edge sophomore Alexandra Blair (Akron, Ohio) by .18 of a second at the finish line in the women's mile registering a time of 5:20.49.
Senior Kyle Walker (Cincinnati, Ohio) claimed the men's 60-meter hurdles in 8.06, while senior Skyler Willis (Cincinnati, Ohio) clocked a time of 8.63 to win the women's 60-meter hurdles.
Cooks recorded a throw of 70-8 (21.54m) to take home first place in the women's weight throw. Senior Brittany Funk (Jeromesville, Ohio) finished second with a heave of 69-5.5 (21.17m).
Senior Shauniece Steele (Cincinnati, Ohio) registered a time of 57.04 to finish first in the women's 400 meters.
In the men's high, senior John Dahlstrand (Erie, Pa.) placed second with a leap of 6-6 (1.98m), while sophomore Kasey Beard (Mogadore, Ohio) and freshman Mitch Cavalier (Louisville, Ohio) each recorded career-high jumps topping 6-6.
Junior Bryce Cheek (Lewis Center, Ohio) was Akron's top finisher in the men's 60-meter dash in 6.85, while senior Rachel Christian (Columbus, Ohio) garnered second place in the women's 60-meter dash in 7.57.
Junior Zack Shull (Columbus, Ohio) narrowly missed setting a new personal-best throw in the men's weight throw as he placed second with a heave of 63-7.
Junior Ashleigh Nalty (George Town, Cayman Islands) cleared 5-3.75 to win the women's high jump.
Sophomore Alante Oliver (Dayton, Ohio) took home top honors in the men's 200 meters in 21.44, while sophomore Daziah Green (Canton, Ohio) won the women's 200 meters in 25.34.
Freshman Jordan Latimer (Huber Heights, Ohio) leapt 25-1.25 to claim top accolades in the men's long jump.
Surging to the win in the men's 3,000 meters was sophomore Dan Zupan (Berea, Ohio), who crossed the line in 8:25.23. Freshman Rachel Audet (Sylvania, Ohio) took the women's race in 10:48.88.
In the final running event of the evening, the team of sophomore Miles Baldwin (Cincinnati, Ohio), Browder, freshman Josh Lines (Heath, Ohio) and senior D.J. Williamson (Warren, Ohio) won the men's 4x400 relay in 3:24.83. The women's team finished second in 4:08.13.
Senior Iyisha Weaver (Philadelphia, Pa.) claimed top honors in the women's triple jump with a leap of 36-9.75. In the men's triple jump, junior Joe Oduho (Erie, Pa.) bested the field jumping 45-9.25.
The Zips return to action traveling to Mount Pleasant, Mich., for the Mid-American Conference Championship next Friday and Saturday, Feb. 27-28.
