#13 Akron Rifle Team Travels WIRC Championship on Saturday

AKRON, Ohio – The No. 13 University of Akron rifle team will compete at the 2015 Western Intercollegiate Rifle Conference Championship on Saturday, Feb. 14, in West Lafayette, Ind.
The defending champion Zips will compete against No. 18 Morehead State and No. 27 Rose-Hulman as well as six club teams. The competition begins at 9 a.m. at the Purdue Range.
During its annual Zippy Open in November, the then-ninth-ranked Akron squad defeated Morehead State, 4,623 to 4, 563.
During regular-season action, the Zips also faced off against Rose-Hullman on Jan. 18. As a team, Akron shot a 4,627 to top Rose-Hulman which shot a 4,357. In that match, Akron set a new school record in the air rifle division with a score of 2,341.
In Akron's last regular-season match on Feb. 3, the Zips out-shot No. 17 Mississippi 4,601 to 4,591 to capture the win. In the smallbore competition, UA shot four points better (2,266) than Ole Miss (2,262). Sophomore Zachary Strohl (Barto, Pa.) recorded a score of 573, while junior Matt Chezem (Simi Valley, Calif.) shot a 569. Strohl (591) and Chezem (586) led the way for the Zips again in the air rifle division.
