LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. – The Akron women's golf team won both its matches on Tuesday to finish in fifth place at the Mid-American Conference Match Play Challenge at the Lakewood Ranch Golf & Country Club.
The Zips, the No. 6 seed in this year's event, swept No. 8 seed Central Michigan, 5-0, before downing No. 5 seed Ohio, 2-2-1, with Akron winning the tiebreaker (most holes won). Due to rain pushing the semifinal matches to Tuesday, both matches today featured just nine holes, instead of 18.
Laura Murray led they way for the Zips, winning both matches on the day to finish the week with a perfect 3-0 mark. She led wire-to-wire in a 4&2 win in her match against CMU before posting a 4&3 win against Ohio.
Sierra Everson posted a 2-0-1 mark while Pader Her closed play with a 2-1 mark. Everson won 2 UP against CMU before halving her match against Ohio. Her posted back-to-back 3&2 victories.
Alejandra Velasco-Villanueva and Frida Fougberg each went 1-1 on the day to close the event with 1-2 records overall.
Velasco-Villanueva won 2&1 against Central Michigan, but dropped her final match to Ohio, 1 UP. Fougberg dominated her morning foe, 5&3, but could not replicate the result against Ohio, falling 1 UP.
The Zips will remain in Florida and will travel to For Myers for the Eagle Invitational, which is set to begin on Friday, Feb. 13.
