CANTON, Ohio - The University of Akron men's cross country team turned in a second-place performance, while the Zips' women's squad placed 11th at the Mid-American Conference Cross Country Championships hosted by Akron on Saturday, Oct. 31, at Canton GlenOak High School.
Akron garnered 70 points in the men's race to finish behind defending champion Eastern Michigan (26 points), who captured its 20th overall cross country conference championship.
Taking home its first-ever women's championship was Eastern Michigan (55 points).
Junior Clayton Murphy (New Paris, Ohio) was the Zips' top finisher in the men's race crossing the line in 24:32.86 to place fourth.
Senior Kyle Cochrun (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) came in just under three seconds later in a time of 24:35.46 to garner a seventh-place showing.
Murphy earned first-team All-MAC accolades for the second straight year, while Cochrun collected first-team honors for the initial time with their performances.
In his first conference championship, freshman Joe Rossetti (Stow, Ohio) captured a 16th-place finish coming across the line in 25:21.12 en route to being named MAC Freshman of the Year.
Rounding out the scoring members of the Akron squad was junior Dan Zupan (Berea, Ohio) and senior Aaron Howkins (Stow, Ohio), who registered times of 25:31.88 (20th) and 25:36.92 (25th).
Completing the Zips' efforts was sophomores Garrett Crichlow (Twinsburg, Ohio) and Eric McCabe (Hilliard, Ohio), freshman Jeremiah Fitzgerald (Mantua, Ohio) and senior Trevor Norris (Avon Lake, Ohio), posting marks of 25:56.36 (36th), 26:28.42 (56th), 26:51.25 (65th) and 27:19.91 (73rd), respectively.
Senior Jillian Roth (North Canton, Ohio) led the efforts of the Akron women's team crossing the line in 22:18.7, good for a 36th-place performance.
Redshirt sophomore Sarah Kupniewski (Erie, Pa.) was the Zips' next finisher placing 57th with a time of 22:59.10.
Junior Natalie Zidd (Hinckley, Ohio) recorded a time of 23:23.0 (73rd), while redshirt sophomore Alexandra Blair (Akron, Ohio) and freshman Cynthia Haas (Tallmadge, Ohio) rounded out Akron's scoring contingent crossing the line in 24:15.8 (93rd) and 24:23.1 (95th), respectively.
Redshirt junior Abbie Shea (Salem, Ohio) and redshirt sophomore Tara Snipes (Covington, Ohio) completed the Zips' efforts on the day with times of 25:20.6 (101st) and 25:35.5 (120nd).
Akron returns to action traveling to Madison, Wis., for the Great Lakes Regional Championships, Nov. 13.
