BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The BGSU Falcons score three unanswered goals despite the Akron women's soccer team controlling the game offensively to beat the Zips, 3-0, in Bowling Green Friday night.
Akron (4-6-1) controlled the tempo of the game offensively and recorded 23 shots during the match compared to Bowling Green's (5-5-1) 14 and shots on goal nine to six. In her third game with the Zips, redshirt junior Ariadna Ramos Gandia (Barcelona, Spain) posted a team-high six shots. Senior Katie George (Middleburgh Heights, Ohio) and freshman Becca Gordon (Johnstown, Ohio) added another four shots each with three coming on goal combined.
"We dominated the game in possession, out shot them in all facets but at the end of the day we didn't get the result. It is a disappointing loss after dominating the game offensively," said Akron head coach Noreen Herlihy. "We conceded sloppy goals and that is something we continue to work on. We spent most of the time in their half but could not capitalize and they did."
The Falcons goalie Lauren Cadel, made some brilliant plays to turn away numerous opportunities for the Zips that would have resulted in a goal.
In the first thirteen minutes of the match Akron had six shots from five different players. George and freshman Shea O'Brien (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) registered shots on goal that were saved by Cadel.
BGSU claimed a 1-0 advantage in the 34' when Alex Cheripko scored from a shot from straight away inside the box that was crowded by players.
Gordon recorded two of her four shots in the final minutes of the first half attempting to tie up the match. The keeper saved her first shot and a Falcon defender blocked her second shot.
The Zips again controlled the offensive rhythm at the start of the second half. Senior Jenna Andersen (Sterling Heights, Mich.) had her second shot of the night turned away and George had a shot blocked.
Akron turned the ball over in the midfield and Bowling Green took advantage scoring their second goal of the night to take a 2-0 lead.
The Zips continued to push the ball into the offensive third and play aggressively following the goal. Gordon sent a shot high of the goal and George ripped a shot that was saved and another sailed wide.
In a four-minute span (68'-72"), Akron garnered four shots and three corner kicks but still could not find the back of the net.
The Falcons once again found the back of the net in the 85' to go up, 3-0, and put the game out of reach.
