AKRON, Ohio – University of Akron softball head coach Julie Jones released the Zips' 2016 schedule on Wednesday that includes five tournaments, seven non-conference series, and nine Mid-American conference series with five at Lee Jackson Field.
"The change in the MAC schedule for the 2016 season and beyond will help to level the playing field as far as scheduling goes. We will play each team in the East and cross over to play three teams from the West," said Jones "Even though we will not play everyone every year, this schedule allows us to prepare for one team each weekend as opposed to playing a double header and then traveling to the next campus to face another team in single games. I think our kids will enjoy this format much more than the old format which forced us to travel after playing on Fridays."
The Zips are slated to open up the 2016 campaign with five straight tournaments in the months of February and March. Up first, Akron will compete in the Stetson University Tournament (Feb.12-14).
UA will then participate in the Furman/Upstate Tournament in Greenville, S.C., (Feb. 19-21).
The Zips will travel to Montgomery, Ala., where they will participate in the Alabama State Tournament, (Feb. 27-28).
For the third straight year UA will play in the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla., on March 4-6.
Akron completes tournament play in Washington, D.C., when it takes part in the George Washington Invitational (March 12-13).
On March 20, the Zips travel to Dayton, Ohio, for a single game against the Flyers.
Akron opens the home portion of its schedule in a three-game MAC series against Eastern Michigan (March 25-26).
The Zips then hit the road for a seven-game trip starting on March. 30, with a double header against Cleveland State. They then travel to Mount Pleasant, Mich., for a three-game series with Central Michigan (April 1-2). Akron wraps up the road trip facing Buffalo in a double-header on April 5.
UA is back at Lee Jackson field for a three-game series squaring up against Northern Illinois for one game on April 8 and a double header on April 9. Four days later, April 13, Akron welcomes in Buffalo for a single game.
The Zips have a three-game series against Ohio with one game on April 15 and a double header April 16.
Akron hosts 10 straight games to end the month of April beginning with a double-header with Niagara (April 19). From April 22-23, Bowling Green comes to Akron for a three-game series followed by a twinbill with Youngstown State (April 26). Akron's last home series is (April 29-30) a three game series vs. Miami (Ohio).
UA finishes the season against cross-town rival, at Kent State (May 6-7).
The 2015 MAC Tournament will be held May 11-14 at Akron's Firestone Stadium.
All home games are played on the University of Akron's campus at Lee Jackson Field.
