Women's Golf Heads to South Carolina for Golfweek Program Challenge

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's golf team will open its 2014-15 season on Sunday at the Golfweek Program Challenge at the Caledonia Golf & Fish Club in Pawleys Island, S.C.
The Zips finished last year's challenge in eighth place, posting a three-round score of 917 (+65). Akron finished sixth overall in the Golfweek Program Challenge with a combined men's and women's score of 1,773 (+57).
This year's field includes four Golfstat Top-100 teams, including No. 43 Campbell, No. 84 Furman, No. 88 Old Dominion and No. 92 Jacksonville State. Also competing in this year's event is Gardner-Webb, Houston Baptist, Jacksonville, James Madison, Northern Iowa, Stetson and Valparaiso.
The women's squad will be joined by the men's squad at the event, which awards a men's and women's team champion, as well as a program team champion (combined men's and women's scores). This is the second-straight appearance for Akron in the event.
The 54-hole event is set to begin Sunday at 7:30 a.m. ET with players teeing off from the first and tenth tees.
Rounds two and three are set for Monday and Tuesday, respectively. Fans can follow all three rounds via Golfstat Live Scoring.
The Zips return five letterwinners for the 2014-15 season, led by senior Laura Murray. Akron also returns juniors Sierra Everson, Frida Fougberg and Lesli Stolly, as well as sophomore Mallory Etcheberry.
Joining the Zips will be freshman Pader Her (Holt, Mich.) and transfer Alejandra Velasco-Villanueva (Guadalajara, Mexico), who transferred from Nova Southeastern University.
