DOVER, Del. – The University of Akron (3-4) baseball team fell to Delaware State (4-1) by a final score of 4-0 on Saturday night at Soldier Field in the series-opening matchup.
Sophomore John Valek III provided 5.2 innings with one run allowed and three strikeouts in his second start of the season. Valek was given the loss and is now 1-1 in 2014.
"Valek pitched well for us, but we didn't swing well enough to put any runs on the board, even with 11 hits," Head coach Rick Rembielak said. "I would say we weren't aggressive enough in our at bats. Need a bounce back day tomorrow and string better at bats to sustain rallies."
Redshirt junior Devan Ahart led the way for the Zips on offense with three hits, his second straight three-hit game. Ahart recorded the lone extra-base hit for UA, a double, and is now batting .391 overall.
Freshman James Meeker III was not far behind Ahart as he notched two hits. Six other Zips recorded one base hit apiece.
Redshirt junior Andrew Fanning tossed 1.1 scoreless innings of relief, while redshirt freshman Evan Jensen allowed one earned run in 1.0 inning of work.
Akron will play a doubleheader tomorrow against Delaware State to finalize the three-game set. Game one will begin at 11 a.m., on Soldier Field, with sophomore Michael Steensen scheduled to start on the mound.
