CINCINNATI, Ohio – The University of Akron (7-8) baseball team split the doubleheader on Saturday afternoon against the University of Cincinnati (7-11) at Marge Schott Stadium to cap off the three-game series. UA won game one by 8-0, but fell in the finale to the Bearcats, 4-2.
The Zips received spectacular pitching throughout the first game. Sophomore JT Brubaker saw his record improve to 1-1 after 6.0 scoreless innings with four hits allowed and three strikeouts.
Freshman reliever Josh Davis completed the shutout with 3.0 innings, one hit allowed and four strikeouts, earning his first collegiate save. Davis has not allowed a run in his past 6.0 innings, and has registered eight strikeouts.
Both Akron and Cincinnati traded scoreless frames through the third inning. The Zips broke through the scoreless tie with three runs scored in the third inning. UA followed the three-run fourth with a five-run rally in the fifth inning to give the Zips a strong 8-0 advantage over the Bearcats. Redshirt senior Brady Stewart started the scoring effort with an RBI single, scoring Danny Lawrence.
Devan Ahart and Stewart then completed a double steal of third and second base, respectively. An error by Cincinnati's third baseman allowed Ahart to score, which was followed by Rembielak with his second, two-RBI double of the game, this time down the left field line.
Redshirt senior James Sheltrown capped off the rally with an RBI infield single, and would bring the game to the final score of 8-0 in game one. Overall, the Zips registered 11 hits in game one. Rembielak led the team with two runs, three hits and a career-high four RBI.
