HAMMOND, La. – Akron had a productive day at the plate, scoring all of its runs with two outs over the course of two games on day two of the Tangi Tourism Lion Classic hosted by Southeastern Louisiana. The Zips split a pair of games, falling to Texas Southern 5-2 in eight innings before picking up a 1-0 victory over Nicholls State.
UA (3-1) will wrap up tournament play on Sunday with a single game against UMKC. First pitch is set for 11:00 a.m. ET.
Game One: Texas Southern 5, Akron 2 (8)
Taryn Allmon went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI, but the Zips' offense did not have enough to offset Texas Southern in the eighth inning as UA dropped a 5-2 decision in game one.
Trailing 2-1 heading into the top of the seventh, Allmon delivered an RBI single with two outs to tie to score Savannah Fruin and tie the game at two. Lisa Lash was hit by a pitch to load the bases, giving the Zips a chance to regain the lead, but they were unable to plate any more with two down.
With the score still locked at two, Texas Southern's left fielder stepped to the plate in the bottom of the eighth inning and connected on a three-run home run with two away to steal the win.
MacKenzie Conrad (1-1) threw a complete game, tallying three strikeouts.
Allmon collected two of Akron's three hits, issuing a two-out double in the second inning to score Jessica Reiman from first base and put the Zips on the board first. Texas Southern answered in the bottom of the third inning, scoring a pair of runs on a bases-loaded walk and a wild pitch.
Game Two: Akron 1, Nicholls State 0
Erin Seiler tossed a complete game shutout and struck out eight as the Zips rebounded with a 1-0 win over Nicholls State in game two.
Seiler (1-0) scattered nine hits over her seven innings of work, and forced a double play in the bottom of the seventh to end the game and preserve the victory.
Erin Pond went 2-for-3 and Conrad doubled in the top of the sixth, but Akron's only run came in the fifth inning on a wild pitch with the bases loaded and two outs.
Shawna Mailloux was hit by a pitch, before Pond and Kellie Roudabush drew back-to-back walks. All runners advanced on a wild pitch with Wildey at the plate, bringing home Mailloux for the lone score of the game.
