#9 Akron Rifle Team Hosts Zippy Open

AKRON, Ohio – The No. 9 University of Akron rifle team returns home to host back-to-back weekends of the Zippy Open. Competition begins on Friday, Nov. 7 at 8 a.m. at the Robert A. Pinn Shooting Range in Schrank Hall South.
This weekend's event continues on Saturday, Nov. 8 and Sunday, Nov. 9 at 8 a.m.
Three collegiate teams, as well as three collegiate club teams, 15 junior shooting teams from Ohio and surrounding states, and individual competitors, will participate. The event grew from 40 competitors last fall to more than 160 this fall.
Akron will compete in a three-way match with Morehead State (Saturday) and Memphis (Sunday). Live scoring will be available on GoZips.com, and preliminary results will be posted each evening.
Akron moved up to No. 9 in this week's CRCA poll, the highest ranking in program history.
The Zips are coming off a 4,633 to 3,950 win over the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia last weekend. The 4,633 team points were a new school record.
The sharpshooters re-wrote the school record book yet again. Akron crushed the old smallbore with a 2,310 of a possible 2,400. Junior Matt Chezem earned top gun and led the Zips with a 583. Junior Tim Hopkins and freshman Julia Hatch tied for second with a 578 score each.
The Zippy Open Rifle Match continues next weekend, Nov. 14-16, with competition beginning at 9 a.m. each day.
