ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The Akron rifle team opened Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) competition with a win at Navy on Saturday.
The Zips scored 4,615 to the Midshipmen's 4,592 in a record-setting day.
"Every member of the team has been working extremely hard to prepare for our opening match," said Akron head coach Newt Engle. "With the implementation of new training plans, extended hours, inner squad competitions and more, this year's team is definitely on the move."
Junior Matt Chezem broke the record in smallbore with a 200-19 (previous record was 200-17 from 2012). He earned top gun honors with a record score of 584 (previous record was 581 from 2013). In rifle, Chezem scored a 595 out of a possible 600 points (the previous record was 590 by Akron's NCAA air rifle national champion Jenna Compton from 2009).
Akron will participate in two matches on Saturday, Oct. 11. The Zips travel to powerhouse Kentucky, while the remaining home team members will host John Jay College of New York. Both matches begin at 9 a.m.
