MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- Akron struggled to penetrate the Central Michigan defense in a 3-0 loss Sunday afternoon at the CMU Soccer Complex.
The Zips scattered 12 shots on the day but only one was on goal as UA tried to find an answer for Central's Kaelyn Korte, who scored on both shots she took for the Chippewas.
The result drops Akron to 6-9-1 overall and 2-6-0 in the Mid-American Conference, and moves Central Michigan to 4-11-1 and 2-6-0 in the league.
UA had a few chances to score early in the match off three different corner kicks from Karina Atkinson, the first coming in the ninth minute in an attempt to break the scoreless tie. Central Michigan struck first midway through the opening period off a corner of its own, when Korte headed the ball in from Christen Chiesa to claim the 1-0 advantage.
Not two minutes later, Atkinson fired her second corner kick to set up Lani Smith for a shot, but it was blocked. Smith, still looking for the equalizer, ripped another shot in the 40th minute just before half, but it sailed high of the goal.
Smith totaled five of Akron's 12 shots for the match, and Atkinson added a pair to the total.
The Zips trailed 1-0 at intermission, but were unable to close the gap in the second half. Central Michigan tacked on a pair of insurance goals in the 56th minute and the 63rd minute, from Emily Cooskey and another from Korte.
Amy Dean's shot on goal was in the 78th minute but was saved by Chippewa goalkeeper Heather Laeufer. Alexandra Frawley fired a shot off another Atkinson corner kick in the 84th minute to try and get the Zips on the board, but the attempt was blocked.
Klaire Adee and Alex Luevano-Harden split time in goal for Akron once again. Adee had two saves against the Chippewas and Luevano-Harden had one.
Akron returns home for its final home games of the 2014 season next weekend, hosting Miami (Ohio) on Friday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m., and Ball State on Sunday, Oct. 26 at 12 p.m. ET. UA's seniors will be honored prior to the match against the RedHawks on Friday for senior night.
