AKRON, Ohio -- The University of Akron women's soccer team fell to Miami (Ohio), 1-0, after the RedHawks netted a golden goal in the 103rd minute Friday night at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field.
The golden goal, scored by Miami's Maggie Scott, came after the forward fired two consecutive shots on goal, with the first deflected by Akron's junior goalkeeper, Klaire Adee. Scott found the back of the net off the deflection to give the RedHawks the 1-0 victory.
The result puts UA at 6-10-1 for the season and 2-7-0 in the Mid-American Conference, while Miami moves to 13-2-1 overall and 7-1-1 in the MAC. The match was Akron's sixth overtime game this season, its fourth 2OT game.
Sophomore Sarah Sivic started things off for Akron with a shot on goal from the far right wing in the second minute of play.
Adee followed up defensively with a monster save in the 11th minute, her first save of the match as she would go on to record a career-high nine total saves, playing the full 103 minutes in goal. After posting five saves throughout regulation, the goalkeeper picked up four more in the pair of overtime periods.
Adee recorded another key save in the 24th minute when a shot off the foot of Miami's Jess Bronke was deflected off the crossbar, setting up another shot attempt from inside the box that Adee scooped up to keep the game locked in a scoreless tie.
The Zips were outshot by Miami 19-8 for the match. Senior Lani Smith paced the Zips' offense, posting four shots with two on goal. Sivic followed with two shots on goal of her own. UA finished the night with six total shots on goal.
A header from junior Jenna Andersen inside the box was the Zips' best scoring opportunity in the second half, while a shot on goal in the 97th minute from senior Karina Atkinson was Akron's only shot attempt throughout the overtime periods.
The Zips return to action on Sunday when they play host to Ball State at 12 p.m. in the final regular season home match of the 2014 slate at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field.
