AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron baseball head coach Rick Rembielak announced the hiring of Spencer Schmitz as the volunteer assistant coach for the upcoming season.
"Spencer will be a great addition to our staff as he brings an abundance of successful baseball experience and knowledge to our program. I have known him for a long time as I coached against him as a player and recently as a coach," Rembielak said about the hiring.
Schmitz has served as assistant coach for the Bowling Green State University baseball team since fall 2007, and was a part of a staff that saw two regular season MAC Championships and one MAC Tournament Championship in that time period.
He also has a history playing for the Bowling Green baseball team from 2001-04. Schmitz was a member of the 2001 MAC East Championship team and the 2002 MAC Championship team. He was also named to the Academic All-MAC team in 2002.
"Spencer has played and coached in the MAC under a very respected and successful coach I have had the privilege to know over the years, his father Danny Schmitz. He has experienced four MAC Championships both as a player and a coach, which will be invaluable to our players' development. I'm very pleased to add a proven winner like Spencer to our staff," coach Rembielak said of Schmitz.
Prior to coaching at BGSU, Schmitz was the assistant coach for the Longwood University baseball team in the 2007 season, which resulted in a 34-19 record, the first winning season in Division I history for Longwood.
Schmitz has also spent time as assistant coach for the Bowling Green High School baseball team, the Lake Erie Monarchs of the Great Lakes Summer Baseball League, and the White House Legion baseball team.
