AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron (4-3-2, 1-0-0 MAC) women's soccer team opened up Mid-American Conference play with a 2-1 win over Miami (Ohio) University (3-6-0, 0-1-0 MAC) on Friday night at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field.
Throughout much of the first half, the Zips and RedHawks were amidst a defensive struggle. However, junior Lani Smith changed the defensive pace with an unassisted goal in the 43rd minute, her fourth of the season, to give UA a 1-0 lead going into the half.
Smith, a Solon, Ohio native, struck once again for the Zips with a second half goal in the 57th minute, this time assisted by sophomore Madison Kaser. Smith now leads the Akron offense with five goals in 2013.
