STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The University of Akron women's golf team had a solid start to the 37th Nittany Lion Invitational, closing the first round in 12th place – just six shots outside the top-four – on Friday at the par-72, 6,263-yard Penn State Blue Course.
The Zips posted a round of 20-over 308 to finish the day in 12th place. However, just six strokes separate Akron from Georgetown and Longwood, both tied for fourth place (302, +14). Yale holds a four-stroke lead over the field heading into Saturday's round (289, +1).
Frida Fougberg led the way for the Zips, posting a round of 3-over 75 to close the day in a tie for 21st place. Lina Bengtsson is tied for 34th place following her round of 5-over 77.
Three Zips sit in a group that is tied for 39th place, including Sara Chaves, Laura Murray and Whitney Graff. All three carded rounds of 6-over 78.
Sierra Everson rounded out the squad in a tie for 88th place (86, +14).
