AKRON, Ohio – University of Akron volleyball head coach Ron Arenz announced Wednesday that Anna Wenger (Landisville, Pa.) has signed a national letter of intent to join the program for the 2014 season.
Wenger, a 6-1 outside/right side hitter, has led Hempfield High School to the Pennsylvania state finals for the past two seasons, capturing the state title last year as a junior in 2013.
"My staff and I are ecstatic to announce that Anna has chosen to be a Zip," said Arenz. "She brings the attributes necessary to elevate our program in the Mid-American Conference and has the ability to make an impact very early in her career."
Wenger's prep squad has won the Lancaster Lebanon League championship for the past three consecutive seasons, and will look to defend their state title this Saturday. Wenger led Hempfield with 12 kills and four blocks in its semifinal match Tuesday night.
As a senior this year, Wenger has posted more than 333 kills, bringing her career total to over 850. She has also tallied more than 470 digs and 143 blocks in her four years at HHS.
Wenger is a three-time all-conference and all-district selection, including being named the league's MVP earlier this season.
The Zips' lone signee will join an Akron team next season that loses three seniors to graduation in 2014.
