AKRON, Ohio – After a week off from competition, The University of Akron men's and women's cross country teams will be back in action Saturday at the All-Ohio Championships, hosted by Cedarville University.
The women's 5K race will begin at 2 p.m, while the men's 8K will get underway at 2:45 p.m. More than 40 schools statewide are expected to be at the meet, which will be run at the Elvin R. King Cross Country Course.
The Cedarville Athletics Department will provide a free video stream of the event (weather permitting) on its website, YellowJackets.Cedarville.Edu.
The Zips women, who maintained their No. 14 ranking in this week's Great Lakes Region poll, will be aiming to continue their fast start after winning their first two races of the season.
Behind a first-place finish by sophomore Maria Moore (18:34), the Zips defeated the field in dual-meet scoring at the annual Tommy Evans Invitational on Sept. 6. Then another sophomore, Kayla Whitlow (17:54.90) edged out Moore to take first at the Buffalo Stampede Invitational the following weekend. For her efforts, Whitlow was named Mid-American Conference Runner of the Week.
The men's team has fared well this fall as well, finishing third as a team at the Tommy Evans Invitational and runner-up at Buffalo. Junior Kyle Wheeler has been the men's top finisher each race, finishing fifth individually (20:50) in the four-miler at Tommy Evans and third (25:22.50) in the 8K at the Buffalo Stampede Invite.
The Zips men placed third at the All-Ohio Champioships a year ago, while the women came in sixth.
