Zips Open MAC Schedule at Miami and Ball State This Weekend

AKRON, Ohio -- The University of Akron women's soccer team opens Mid-American Conference play this weekend with a pair of road games as the Zips travel to Miami (Ohio) on Friday at 4 p.m. and then play at Ball State on Sunday at 2 p.m.

The Match ups ...
• Akron opens Mid-American Conference play this weekend with a record of 4-3-0, after falling to Marshall 2-0 at home on Sunday in its last match. The Zips have earned wins this season over Morehead State (3-2), VCU (2-1), Cleveland State (2-0) and Canisius (1-0).
• Miami is 6-2-0 on the season as the RedHawks blanked Indiana State, 4-0, in their last match on Sunday. Miami has won four out of its last five contests.
• Ball State is 3-3-2 overall and hosts Buffalo on Friday prior to playing Akron on Sunday. The Cardinals fell to Butler, 2-1, in their last match on Sunday and are 1-2-2 in their last five games.
• The Zips and Miami will meet for the 14th time overall in women's soccer and Akron's all-time record against the RedHawks is 4-7-2. Miami has won the last two meetings, including a 3-0 win last year in Akron on Oct. 16, 2011. The two sides also met in the 2009 and 2010 MAC Tournaments with Miami winning both games by a 2-0 result.
• Akron and Ball State will be meeting for the 12th time in women's soccer as the two teams have met every year since 2001. Ball State holds a 6-2-3 series advantage and is 4-0-1 all-time against the Zips at home, including a 2-1 win over Akron last year on Oct. 7, 2011.
• The Zips are 11-3-1 in MAC East play since 2009 and have qualified for the last three MAC Tournaments.
Scouting the RedHawks …
• Miami has scored a conference leading 23 goals and surrendered only six so far this season. The offense has been led by Jess Kodiak (6 goals, 3 assists), Haley Walter (4g, 4a) and Kelsey Dinges (4g, 1a). In goal, Allison Norenberg has started all eight games, has a 0.78 goals against average and 22 saves.
Scouting the Cardinals …
• Ball State has been out-scored by its opponents, 10-9, through eight games. Nicole Pembleton (2g, 1a) and Jasmine Moses (2g) are the leading scorers. Pavla Benyrova and Amanda Dreyfus each have two assists. Aubrey Buehler has started all eight games in goal and has a 1.21 GAA with 29 saves.
Zips to Watch ...
• Freshman forward Megan Waskowski leads the Zips in scoring with three goals and three assists for a team-high nine points. Waskowski was named to the all-tournament team at the Tennessee Lady Vol Classic after netting two assists against VCU.
• Senior forward Ashley Hughes has appeared in 58 career matches for the Zips and is second on the team in scoring with two goals and two assists this year. She scored the game-winner against Canisius in the 86th minute.
• Like Hughes, senior midfielder Katie Wise has plenty of experience as she has also appeared in 58 career matches. Wise has eight career goals to her credit.
• Junior midfielder Kelly DeNiro had a career-high three points on a goal and an assist at Cleveland State. DeNiro was also selected to the all-tournament team at Tennessee.
• Junior defender Amber Kern was a second team All-MAC selection in 2011 when she started all 18 games and helped the UA defense notch eight shutouts. Kern also had an assist against in Akron's season opener Morehead State.
Zips in the Record Books ...
• Katie Wise is tied for 10th in UA history in career scoring with 17 points. Wise's eight career goals is eighth and her five game-winning goals is fifth.
• Kelly DeNiro's eight career assists ranks tied for fifth in Akron women's soccer history. DeNiro is also tied for ninth in career shots (66).
• Ashley Hughes is tied for ninth with seven career goals and is tied for 10th with 17 career points. She is also tied for sixth with four career game-winning goals and seventh in career shots with 80.
