Poor Weather Cancels Final Round of MAC Golf Championship

SUGAR GROVE, Ill. – Before the rain and lightning began, and shortly after play restarted, the Akron men's golf team was on a roll. However, weather halted play and cancelled the final round of the Mid-American Conference Championship on Sunday.
Before play was cancelled for good, the Zips were tearing up the leaderboard, climbing five spots to third place at the par-72, 6,978-yard Rich Harvest Farms Golf Course. UA sat at 2-under with players on holes 12-15, the second-lowest round of the day to that point. But the foul weather forced the halt to the event, reverting Akron back to a tie for eighth place based on the 54-hole results.
Akron finished with a score of 906 (+42). The Zips finished tied with Bowling Green. Kent State won the title with a three-round tally of 855 (-9).
Charlie Bull earned First-Team All-MAC honors as well as earning a spot on the MAC All-Tournament team after finishing in the top five. He is the first UA player to earn First-Team All-MAC since Colin Clemente in 2008. He closed his second MAC Championship event tied for fourth place with a score of 1-over 217. Through 12 holes on Sunday, he was at even par.
Senior Scott Landreth was the recipient of the Earl Yestingmeier Sportsmanship Award, which is award each year to a senior and is voted on by the student-athletes participating in the championship event.
Ryan Mason finished tied for 16th place with a score of 225 (+9) and was having his best round of the tournament, firing a 2-under par round through 12 holes. Landreth concluded his Akron career in 30th place (231, +15) and was also riding a hot round, sitting at 1 under with six holes to play.
Bull, Mason and Landreth were all in the top-25 when the horn sounded the cancellation of play.
Cameron Simmons closed the event with in a tie 38th place (236, +20) while Tim Lew was 43rd with a score of 241 (+25). Simmons was at +1 through 15 holes while Lew was 7-over par.
With the victory, Kent State earned a point in the overall PNC Wagon Wheel Challenge standings. KSU leads the overall standings 7.0-5.0, with three sports remaining (men's track, women's track and baseball). The first school to 8.0 points will earn the inaugural Wagon Wheel Challenge trophy.
