Track Concludes NCAA East Preliminary Round
May 26 | Track & Field
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Five more Zips competed on the third and final day of the NCAA East Preliminary Round at Hodges Stadium on the campus of the University of North Florida Saturday.
Unfortunately for Akron, however, none were able to join teammate Eric Hubbard, who punched his ticket to the NCAA Championships in the hammer throw the day before. Hubbard, a senior from Medina, Ohio, who broke his own school record during qualifying Friday with a huge toss of 207-04, will have two weeks to prepare for the national meet, which will run from June 6-9 in Des Moines, Iowa.
UA had three entries in the men's pole vault Saturday. Joe Wesley and Shawn Light each jumped 16-11.50 to finish 20th and 23rd, respectively, while Dan Garrett cleared 15-11.75 to place 38th. The top 12 finishers in each event advanced to the NCAA Championships.
Also competing for the men's team was Nick Banke, who placed 40th a mark of 53-04.25 in the shot put.
Brittany Funk, who won the 2012 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championship in the women's hammer, was the lone female representative for the Zips Saturday. The sophomore recorded a top throw of 177-11 in the event while finishing 27th overall.
