Brown Earns MAC East Pitcher of the Week Award
April 09 | Baseball
AKRON, Ohio – Senior Andrew Brown has been named Mid-American Conference East Division Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Brown is the second straight Akron hurler to win the award, claiming the honor one week after freshman Pat Dyer. It is Brown's third career weekly award.
The Painesville, Ohio product was nearly unhittable in leading UA to a series-opening 3-0 win over Bowling Green on Friday at Canal Park. Brown went the distance and allowed just two hits to the Falcons – a team that was batting .305. One of BGSU's hits was a wind-blown double that evaded left-fielder Kurt Gamby and the other a single through the right side. Brown struck out six and walked just two in the outing. It was Brown's second complete game shutout in his last three starts.
The win sparked a three game sweep – Akron's first since the 2009 season - of the visiting Falcons and moved Akron to 13-17 overall and 6-3 in MAC play. The league mark matches the program's best ever start to a MAC season. The Zips also went 6-3 to start conference play in 2003 and 2004.
Akron hosts Pittsburgh at Canal Park tomorrow at 3 p.m. and travels to Ohio State for a 6:35 p.m. start on Wednesday. The Zips continue MAC play this weekend with a three game series at Buffalo.
