AKRON, Ohio – Striking out Buffalo batters on Saturday will have more meaning this season as the Akron softball team will hold its annual Strike Out Cancer Day against the Bulls on Saturday, May 5, at Lee R. Jackson Softball Field.
Pink Akron softball shirts will be available for purchase on Saturday for $15.00. Fans can also make a one-time donation or donate a certain amount for each strikeout recorded by an Akron pitcher. All proceeds will be donated to former Akron Zips' softball player Deann Viebranz to assist in her fight against metastatic breast cancer.
Viebranz played second base for Akron from 1981-84, helping the Zips to a 129-36-2 record. She was a Second-Team All-American selection in 1984 in addition to a First-Team Division II All-Mid-Atlantic Region selection. She was selected twice as the team's Defensive Player of the Year (1983-84) and her 47 career sacrifice hits rank second all-time in UA history. Her .341 career batting average also ranks eighth all-time.

First pitch against the Bulls is slated for 2 p.m. ET. Akron will open the weekend when they play host to Kent State on Friday, May 4, in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. ET. The series will be part of the PNC Wagon Wheel Challenge in which a full point will be up for grabs.
