Softball Tops Marist and Rider to Extend Win Streak to Three Games
March 04 | Softball
FAIRFAX, Va. – The University of Akron softball team extended its win streak to three games with a 5-3 victory over Marist and a 7-3 defeat of Rider on Sunday in the final day of competition at the Patriot Classic at George Mason. The Zips improved their overall record to 6-7.
Brittany Maurer earned the win in both outings, pitching a complete game in each, to notch her third win of the weekend and improve to 6-6 in the circle for the season. She also posted two hits, including a triple versus Marist. Keelia Nester paced the Zips offensively, posting four hits, three RBI and two runs between the two contests.
Against Marist, UA scored five runs on 11 hits and kept the Red Foxes off of the scoreboard after the second inning. The score was 1-all after the first and the Zips trailed 3-2 after two frames, but jumped ahead with a two-run third and posted an insurance run in the fifth.
A two-run home run to center field by Lisa Lash gave Akron a 4-3 advantage in the bottom of the third. Lash's first homer of the year brought in Kellie Roudabush, who had opened the inning by reaching base on an error and then advanced to second base. A sacrifice bunt by Allison Dorr moved Roudabush to third.
Against Rider, UA trailed 2-1 after three innings, but a five-run rally in the bottom of the fifth pushed the squad to victory.
With one out in the fifth, Rachael Ratcliffe doubled to left center and Roudabush walked on, before a double to left field by Dorr brought in both UA base runners. Lash kept the rally alive when she got on base on a fielder's choice. With two outs, Nester singled to center and brought in Dorr and Montesano, who had come in to pinch run for Lash. Alex Helfrich singled to the shortstop, plating Nestor in the process.
Rider put up one run in the top of the sixth and Akron countered with one tally in the bottom of the inning to end the day's scoring.
The Zips, who defeated tournament-host George Mason 6-3 on Saturday night to spark their win streak, next travels to Kissimmee, Fla., for eight contests in the Rebel Spring Games on March 9-12. UA takes on Penn and Indiana State during day one at the event.
