Akron Softball Opens MAC Play Friday Against Toledo

AKRON, Ohio – The Akron softball team will open Mid-American Conference play on Friday when it plays host to the Toledo Rockets at Lee R. Jackson Softball Field.
The Zips (11-14-1) and Rockets (7-19) will play a doubleheader beginning at noon ET, with game two of the twin bill set for 2 p.m. Game times were moved up one hour due to rain in the forecast for Friday afternoon.
Akron is coming off a 0-1-1 performance against Youngstown State on Tuesday. UA scored 11 runs between the two games, falling 7-6 in game one and tying the Penguins 5-5 in game two, after the game was called to darkness after the completion of the sixth inning.
Crystal Hernandez led the way for Akron, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs on the day while Alex Helfrich went 3-for-6 with a walk. Brittany Maurer (10-11) pitched six innings between the two games, allowing six runs (two earned) on nine hits and striking out three.
The Rockets enter the contest having dropped three-straight and seven of their last nine. UT comes to Akron after dropping a pair of games at Notre Dame on March 28. Lindsey Tobias leads the Toledo offense with a .282 batting average, including one home run and 17 RBIs.

The Zips will continue MAC play on Saturday and Sunday when they play host to Bowling Green. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
