March 17 | Softball
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The University of Akron softball team posted a 3-2 comeback win over Princeton and lost 6-1 to nationally-ranked Louisville on Saturday at Shea Stadium in its first day of competition at the Capital Classic on the campus of Sacramento State.
Alex Helfrich led the Zips (11-10) with four hits between the two contests. Brittany Maurer earned the win over Princeton (2-8), pitching all seven innings and tallying four strikeouts and zero walks. Kinsi Tellep earned the loss versus Louisville (22-0), which is listed No. 14 in the USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association rankings and No. 15 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll. She allowed nine hits in 4.1 innings before being relieved by Lisa Lash. Lash closed out the game by allowing three hits and two walks.
Princeton jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a single run in the top of the first and third, but Akron evened things up in the bottom of third and plated the eventual game-winning score in the bottom of the fourth.
In the bottom of the third, Taryn Allmon led off with a single up the middle, followed by a Helfrich single to third base that moved Allmon to second. Allmon and Helfrich both scored during a failed pick-off attempt and throwing error by the catcher.
Helfrich also had a hand in providing the Zips' go-ahead run in the fourth. With two outs, she singled to third base and brought home Iesha Mountain. Mountain was brought in to pinch run and stole both second and third to set up what proved to be the game-winning scoring sequence.
Louisville put up two runs in the bottom of the first and third innings, and built the advantage with a single run in both the fifth and sixth. The Zips found the scoreboard in the top of the seventh when a Cassie Gleisner single to left field with two outs brought home Amanda Ricker.
On Sunday, Akron faces off against Colorado State and Sacramento State at noon and 2 p.m. ET, respectively.
