Softball Readies for College of Charleston Cougar Classic

Cougar Classic Schedule and Live Statistics
AKRON, Ohio – The Akron softball team takes to the road for the second weekend of the season, traveling to Charleston, S.C., to participate in the College of Charleston Cougar Classic.
The Zips (2-3) face off against tournament host College of Charleston on Friday at 4 p.m. ET and then take on Morehead State at 8 p.m. On Saturday, UA squares off with Marshall at 2 p.m. and Charleston Southern at 4 p.m., before concluding their part in the event on Sunday at 10 a.m. versus Kennesaw State.
All contests will be held at Patriots Point and live statistics will be available for all games.
In its opening week of action at the Southeast Louisiana Lion Classic, UA posted an 8-3 win over Southeastern Louisiana and defeated Southern 13-3, but dropped games to Northern Colorado, 11-10, Troy State, 9-2, and Nicholls State, 5-1.
Leading the way for Akron through five games is Alex Helfrich with a .545 batting average. She's responsible for six hits in 11 at-bats and has four RBI. Alissa Birkhimer also had an impressive opening weekend – collecting seven hits, two home runs and eight RBI in 16 plate appearances. She is batting .438.
The Zips will take a break from competition next week, returning to the field March 3-4 for the George Mason Invitational in Fairfax, Va. UA will participate in the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla., on March 9-12.
