AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron softball program continued to maintain its presence in the local community by spending time volunteering at The County of Summit Developmental Disabilities Center (Summit DD) in Tallmadge.
The team and Zippy spent time visiting with the clients, including some who work at the center.
Head coach Julie Jones has always made it a priority for her program to stay active and involved in the greater Akron community, and through this activity her teams have built a close relationship with the clients at the Summit DD over the past five years.
"It is great for our student-athletes to have a chance to interact with the clients, and it is a simple way to spread a little joy," Jones said. "What we find is that we enjoy it even more than those we visit, regardless of their age or place in life. It is a worthwhile experience for everyone involved, and we appreciate the Summit DD for allowing us to share it with them."
Jones and the Zips are scheduled to begin the 2013 campaign on the road at the Georgia Southern Tournament, February 9-10.
