CLEVELAND, Ohio – Akron senior Chelsea Harvey has been named the Mid-American Conference East Division Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
This is the fourth time in her career Harvey has garnered MAC Player of the Week honors, and also the fourth time this season that an Akron player has received this recognition from the conference.
Harvey took the lead role in Akron's stellar defensive cast in two solid wins over Eastern Michigan and Central Michigan last weekend. She played well above her marks this season, defending the Zips' home floor and putting up 4.00 digs per set compared to her average of 2.90.
The outside hitter played a clean match against Central Michigan without posting a receiving error despite being targeted 37 times. On the weekend overall, Harvey carried a .983 receiving percentage. She also protected the net with 0.38 blocks per set.
With 19 digs against EMU and 13 against CMU, Harvey has now recorded double-digit digs in her last five consecutive contests.
As a team, Akron (12-10, 5-5 MAC) currently stands in third place in the East Division standings and sixth place in the conference overall. Harvey and the Zips will look to maintain MAC Tournament eligibility this week when they travel to Buffalo on Thursday, Oct. 25 for a 7 p.m. tilt before returning to Rhodes Arena to host Toledo on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 5 p.m.
