AKRON, Ohio – Looking for its first Mid-American Conference win of the season, The University of Akron volleyball team will travel to Bowling Green and Miami (Ohio) this weekend for a pair of East division match-ups. The Zips (3-12, 0-2) will take on BGSU at the new Stroh Center on Friday, Sept. 30, at 7 p.m. ET before facing the RedHawks in Millett Hall on Saturday, Oct. 1, also at 7 p.m.
Last weekend, Akron lost a five-setter to Buffalo after making a thrilling comeback from two sets and match point down and fell in four to Ball State two days later. Senior outside hitter Courtney Jarvis leads the squad with 162 kills on the season for an average of 3.00 kills/set, while sophomore Alex Cocklin has stepped up to add 94 kills and 2.2 points/set. After missing four matches due to injury, setter Morgan Kuhn returned to the lineup and tallied 72 assists to start MAC play.
On Friday, Akron takes on Bowling Green (14-1, 1-1) at the Falcons' brand new Stroh Center. BGSU suffered its only loss of the season last weekend at Ohio in its first league contest and went on to defeat Kent State in straight sets. Eight of the Falcons' 14 wins have come in sweeps, and they are coming off a 3-0 win at Wright State on Sept. 27. Bowling Green also leads the MAC in hitting percentage with a mark of .275 through 48 sets. Akron trails the all-time series with BG 19-24, and the last time the teams met, the Zips claimed a five-set victory on the road.
UA will close out the weekend at Miami (Ohio) (10-6, 1-1) on Saturday against a RedHawks team that has gone 1-4 in its last five matches, with the only win coming at Kent State. Miami went 0-3 at the Tar Heel Classic and split on the opening weekend of conference action, falling at Ohio in straight sets.
