SUGAR GROVE, Ill. – The University of Akron men's golf team opened up the 2011-12 season with a ninth-place finish at the Northern Intercollegiate on Sunday.
The Zips posted a three-round score of 909 (+57) to close out the first event of the year. No. 33 Central Florida won the team title with a score of 18-over 870.
After fog delayed the first round and caused the postponement of the second round on Saturday, Akron entered the final pairings in eighth place after concluding the second round earlier on Sunday.
Sophomore Charlie Bull led the way for the Zips, finishing tied for 12th place with a score of 7-over 220 (71-76-73). He has now finished in the top-16 in each of the last four events dating back to last spring. Senior Ryan Mason earned a top-25 finish with a score of 226 (+13) following rounds of 72, 78 and 76 to finish tied for 22nd place.
Scott Landreth opened his senior campaign tied for 48th place after carding rounds of 78, 74 and 79 for the weekend (+18, 231).
