Gold Team Takes Volleyball Scrimmage in Straight Sets

AKRON, Ohio – On Saturday afternoon, The University of Akron volleyball team held its annual Blue & Gold scrimmage in preparation for the 2011 season. The Gold team claimed the victory, taking down the Blue team 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-15).
On the Gold squad, sophomore Alex Cocklin led all players with 23 kills on 46 attacks for a .391 hitting percentage. Gold teammate Alex Wiederholt added 10 kills and four service aces, while setter Morgan Kuhn notched 35 assists. Junior Paiton Twitty and freshman Kymberle Gordon contributed four kills apiece. As a team, Gold finished with a solid .341 hitting percentage.
The Blue team was led by senior Courtney Jarvis, who recorded 10 kills. She was followed closely by fellow senior Tina Dimitrijevs with nine kills. Dimitrijevs also led the Blue team with a .562 attack percentage and three solo blocks. Sophomore Jill Paluch handled the setting duties and finished with 27 assists. Newcomer Janine Lawler chipped in seven kills on 15 attacks (.200), two service aces and two block assists.
The Zips kick off the regular season next weekend at the UAB/Samford Tournament in Birmingham, Ala. Their first match will be against Arkansas State on Friday, Aug. 26 at 10 a.m. ET in Samford's Pete Hanna Center.
