Volleyball Set to Hold Blue & Gold Match on Saturday

AKRON, Ohio – To kick off the 2011 campaign, The University of Akron volleyball team will hold its annual Blue & Gold scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 20 at 2 p.m. ET in James A. Rhodes Arena. The event is free and open to all fans that want to get an early look at the 2011 Zips.
Under fourth-year head coach Ron Arenz, Akron is coming off its best season since 2003 after posting a 15-17 overall record and finishing second in the MAC East. This season, UA was tabbed third in the East in the MAC preseason poll and senior middle blocker Tina Dimitrijevs was selected to the preseason All-MAC squad. In 2010, Dimitrijevs led the league in hitting percentage (.367) and earned All-MAC Second Team honors.
The Zips return nine players from last year's team and have added three newcomers to the mix who have the potential to make an immediate impact on the floor. With the combination of depth, experience and talent, this group is looking to challenge for a MAC title.
The regular season begins next weekend, as UA travels to Birmingham, Ala. to play in the UAB/Samford Tournament. The Zips will face Arkansas State, co-host UAB, and Troy at Samford's Pete Hanna Center. The first home action of the season falls on Friday, Sept. 2, when the Zips face St. Francis (Pa.) as part of the Akron Invitational.
