Trio of Zips Earn All-MAC Honors
November 03 | Women's Soccer
AKRON, Ohio – Three University of Akron women's soccer players have been named to the All-Mid-American Conference Second Team, the conference office announced today. Senior goalkeeper Jeny Wolbert, senior midfielder Jordan Clark, and sophomore defender Amber Kern were all honored for their efforts on the pitch this season by the conference's head coaches.
"I am very proud for the team and these three players for these awards," UA coach Chris Pfau said. "The leadership from both Jordan and Jeny was a huge reason for our success this season. Amber Kern's performances were consistently high throughout the fall and contributed largely to our defensive national rankings during most of the season."
The trio of honorees is the highest number of All-MAC selections the program has received in its 11-season history.
"This is the most players named to either the first or second team in the history of our program," Pfau continued. "The success of the team this season, as evident by these awards, will allow us to continue build a solid foundation for this program and keep pushing us to bigger things."
Wolbert concluded her record-breaking Akron career with an outstanding season in between the posts in 2011. Wolbert claimed seven clean sheets – five in MAC play – on the year and held a goals against average of 0.96 in conference games. The Kitchener, Ontario native made a total of 78 saves and was named MAC Defensive Player of the Week on two occasions (Aug. 22, Sept. 26). Wolbert will leave Akron as the record holder in several career and single season goalkeeping records, including career saves, career wins, single season saves, and single season shutouts.
Jordan Clark – who has appeared in more career matches than any other player in program history – started all 18 matches this season in the defensive midfield. The Brecksville, Ohio native displayed an excellent ability to gain possession and distribute out of the back, recording four assists on the season. Clark stands ninth on the Akron career points list with 19 (6g, 7a). Her seven career assists are tied for fifth all-time. Clark played in 76 games in her Akron career, making 67 starts.
Kern had an excellent sophomore season, starting all 18 games at center back. The Dublin, Ohio native helped lead an Akron backline that totaled eight shutouts, with five blank sheets coming in conference play. As a team, Akron had the third-best defensive record in the conference, allowing just over a goal per match.
