MOREHEAD, Ky. – A rarity in the sport of rifle occurred Sunday as The University of Akron rifle team tied Morehead State. Both squads fired total scores of 4555.
MSU grabbed the top three spots in the smallbore competition with sophomore Victoria Brown grabbing fourth in the event with a score of 569 to lead the Zips. Freshman John Hupp's 564 was good for sixth, and senior Ryan Stein placed eighth with a 563.
"Definitely not our day in the smallbore," Akron coach Newt Engle said. "This team is way better than that and now we need to figure out what happened and get back on track."
The Zips rebounded to take the top three spots in the air rifle and outpace Morehead State, 2301-2283. Senior Zac Szabo grabbed to top honors with a personal-best of 581. Stein was second with a 579, and junior Nicole Dietrich finished third with a 577.
UA's next competition will be after winter break, when they travel to Morgantown, W.Va. to take on perennial power West Virginia on Jan. 14, 2012.
